Cody Coughlin’s 2017 racing season came to a close on Friday night at the 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida. The young driver fought an ill-handling truck throughout the entire day at the challenging track, but he and his ThorSport Racing team battled all night long to score a top-15 finish.

Coughlin battled a Toyota Tundra that was too tight in the two morning practice sessions. After starting the 200-mile race from the 16th position, Coughlin fought a truck that flipped over to the loose side.

The 21-year-old driver and his crew, led by interim crew chief Rich Lushes, made changes every pit stop, but their ability to improve the handling of Coughlin’s truck was limited due to the lack of caution flags during the race.

The yellow flag waved just twice, for the two stage breaks, during the race, making it difficult to improve the truck at a difficult race track. When the checkered flag waved on lap 134, Coughlin was in the 14th position.

“It wasn’t the night we wanted, but we battled all night long and finished higher than we ran,” said Coughlin. I appreciate my guys fighting for me all night long and all season long.” 

Unofficially, Coughlin finished his first full NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season 13th in the points standings.

“I had a lot of fun this year racing with ThorSport Racing. There were many challenges that I faced for the first time racing a full season at this level, and we were able to overcome many of them. It was a pleasure to work with Rich (Lushes, interim crew chief) all season long like we did six years ago in Late Models. I can’t thank every crew member enough for their hard work this season. I appreciate Duke and Rhonda Thorson for letting me drive their trucks this season. It has been a great experience. I also can’t thank my parents (Di and John) and my sister Kennedi enough for all of their love and support and for giving me the opportunities that I’ve been given to pursue my passion.”
