Coughlin earns career-best road course finish north of the border

STATESVILLE, N.C. (August 27, 2018)—In his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start on a road course, Coughlin hustled his way to a career-best road-race result at the 2.459-mile track.

“It was a fun day with our No. 2 JEGS Chevrolet Silverado team,” Coughlin said. “Our team had a good, clean, race. The entire GMS Racing team and Doug (Randolph, crew chief) did a great job.

“Being a strong contender, and running up-front was exciting. However, we had some radio technicalities in the last few laps that cost us position, but overall it was a solid day at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.”

Coughlin, part of the four-truck GMS Racing contingent, set the 12th-fastest lap in qualifying for the scheduled 64-lap race, and turned a lap of 94.211 seconds at 93.964 mph in the final qualifying round. The 12th-place qualifying effort on Saturday, August 25 was also a career best for Coughlin in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

The Delaware, Ohio, native took the green-flag from the 12th-place, and while he slid back into the 13th position after three laps completed, by Lap Five he returned to the 12th-place. Coughlin radioed to crew chief Doug Randolph that the No. 2 JEGS Chevrolet Silverado had a free-handling condition, but he was still able to make forward progression despite the condition, advancing to the 11th-place by Lap 10. On Lap 17 Coughlin came to pit road where his GMS Racing over-the-wall team made adjustments, changed four tires and filled his machine with fuel. With the varying pit strategy, Coughlin finished Stage One on Lap 20 in the 17th-place.

Under caution, Coughlin reported a gauge issue with his No. 2 JEGS Chevrolet Silverado. He restarted from the third-place as the 32-truck field returned to green-flag racing for Stage Two. The caution flag flew again on Lap 32 as Coughlin was scored in the fifth-place. Under the caution period, Randolph brought Coughlin to pit road for four tires and fuel. Coughlin emerged from pit road to restart in the 15th-place, but he began to make up the positions, and advanced to 11th-place before the end of Stage Two on Lap 40.

Coughlin restarted in the third-place on Lap 49, but after the restart for the final stage, the caution flag quickly waved on Lap 50 as he maintained position. On the restart, Coughlin was shuffled-back to the eighth place by Lap 52. With five laps remaining in the scheduled distance Coughlin was scored in the 16th-place. On Lap 61 the fifth, and final, caution flag waved. Randolph radioed to Coughlin to make a stop under yellow for four fresh tires and fuel, but the driver of the yellow and black machine was unable to hear due to an issue with the radio transmission. He restarted in the 16th-place, and climbed to 13th-place with one lap to go. Coughlin managed to dodge mayhem and kept his JEGS Chevrolet Silverado on the track as trucks were spinning every which way through the left-and-right-hand turns on the final lap to cross the in the 15th -place.

The 22-year old advanced to the 11th-place in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver point standing on the strength of six top-10 finishes.

The next event on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule is the World of Westgate 200 on Friday, September 14, at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nev. The FS1 and Motor Racing Network (MRN) will broadcast the race at 9:00 p.m. (ET).
